Austin, Texas – June 23, 2025 – /LaGuardia Media and Public Relations/ – On Sunday, June 22, 2025, Governor Greg Abbott vetoed Texas SB3; the bill that would ban and essentially criminalize possession, manufacture or distribution of THC products/consumable hemp in the State of Texas.
Citing that the bill would face “valid constitutional challenges” (due to the farm bill which legalizes hemp in 2018) and would be in contradiction to federal law, Governor Greg Abbott decided to veto the bill at what some would call the last minute. Opting out of a total ban, the Texas governor called lawmakers back for a special session, despite the disapproval of Lt. Governor Dan Patrick, a staunch supporter of the bill. In this session they are to discuss implementing regulations that are similar to the alcohol industry for THC and consumable hemp products, as an alternative to a full ban.
These are the exact sentiments that were expressed by consumers, business owners and consumable hemp entrepreneurs, of whose efforts this veto may be the direct result. With over 120,000 handwritten letters and signed petitions sent to the governor’s office, opponents of the bill made their voices heard.
“This was a collective effort”, states Ahmad Alnajjar, owner of Trippiez Smoke Shop in the capital city of Austin, Texas. “I couldn’t be more proud of organizations like the Texas Hemp Business Council or Hometown Hero, who were instrumental in leading the way to us having this victory.” He continues: “The battle is won, but the war is not over. We wish to be involved in actually crafting this new regulation.”
Proposed regulations that would take effect in the place of a full ban may include age limits, childproof packaging, and labeling which clearly states information on the products contents; potency, percentages, etc.
The governor’s office issued an official proclamation explaining Abbott’s decision and calling for more comprehensive regulation regarding consumable hemp.
