The robotaxis will operate in designated areas of Austin identified as the “safest,” utilizing geofencing technology to limit operations to these regions. All vehicles in the fleet will be remotely monitored by Tesla employees, who will oversee the operations without having any human drivers present inside the vehicles at all times.

This new service will leverage Tesla’s state-of-the-art Full Self-Driving (FSD) software, specifically the FSD Unsupervised version. These robotaxis will depend entirely on cameras and artificial intelligence for navigation, distinguishing Tesla from competitors such as Waymo, which use lidar and radar sensors in their vehicles.

Musk cautioned that the company wishes to validate the effectiveness and safety of its robotaxi service with a small fleet before making any commitment to scaling up the operations. However, the announcement comes during a time of increased scrutiny for Tesla’s software and safety records. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is currently investigating the FSD software due to several accidents reported in adverse weather conditions.

In addition to safety concerns, Tesla is facing challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with declining sales attributed in part to Musk’s political affiliations and public propositions. This has led to protests outside Tesla dealerships, including those in Austin.
