Za’Riyah Sheffield, just 16 years old, was shot and killed by another 16-year-old boy at the Bridge at Harris Ridge Apartments located on East Howard Lane. Za’Riyah’s father, Adrian Sheffield, expressed his heartbreak in a poignant statement. “Bro, you took my life. That was my friend, my best friend, my angel,” he said, visibly shaken. The police stated that the suspect had accused Za’Riyah of merely looking at him, a claim that seems to have initiated this tragic turn of events.

Described by her family as irreplaceable, Za’Riyah was a student at Connally High School with aspirations of working in business. Her mother, Wanakee White, struggled to comprehend the loss: “There’s no other person out here in the whole world that’s like Za’Riyah. She was the best thing in the world, like, for her to be taken … I don’t know.”
Her aunt, Neisha Sheffield, was left devastated and found herself losing her voice from the sorrow. “My baby not going to text me anymore. My life is going to be so different,” Neisha shared, her grief palpable. “He didn’t just cheat my baby out of her life. He cheated her entire family out of the best thing all of us have ever had.”

Another family member, Unique Bowser, remembered the gentle spirit of Za’Riyah, saying, “To know her is to love her. And to know love. Because that’s all she was gonna give. That’s all she giving to anybody.” This sentiment was echoed by Terrie Fisher, who lamented the future that Za’Riyah would never get to experience. “The choices that are no longer there for her to have and the opportunity in life, they’re gone and they’re gone forever,” added Fisher.
