Austin, Texas – An 18-year-old named Devin Guevara has been charged with multiple felonies following an incident that occurred on May 31, which involved a high-speed police chase and an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement. The event unfolded at approximately 11:15 p.m. near the intersection of Research Boulevard and North Lamar Boulevard.

According to police reports, officers attempted to stop a black Hyundai that had been reported stolen. The vehicle, driven by Guevara, fled from the scene, running several red lights and reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour during a chase that lasted around 4.5 miles. The situation escalated significantly when Guevara’s vehicle collided with a cement pillar at about 11:21 p.m. Despite this crash, he continued to evade police.

Shortly thereafter, Guevara’s car struck another vehicle at an intersection, causing the other vehicle to spin into oncoming traffic. As officers approached the scene to perform a high-risk stop, Guevara allegedly fired multiple rounds at them using a semi-automatic pistol. Officers returned fire, hitting Guevara in the collarbone, but no officers were injured during the exchange.

After sustaining his injury, Guevara complied with police orders and exited the vehicle through the driver’s side window. He was then taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and subsequently booked into the Travis County Jail.

Guevara is facing five charges, which include:

  • Three counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant (first-degree felony)
  • One count of Evading Motor Vehicle (third-degree felony)
  • One count of Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle (state jail felony)

As a result of the collision, the driver of the other vehicle sustained minor injuries and received treatment before being released from the hospital. One police officer also experienced minor injuries and was treated and released. Following the incident, the four officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard department protocol.

The Austin Police Department (APD) is currently conducting two concurrent investigations: a criminal investigation by the APD Special Investigations Unit in cooperation with the Travis County District Attorney’s Office, and an administrative investigation by the APD Internal Affairs Unit, which is overseen by the Office of Police Oversight.

APD Chief Lisa Davis expressed disbelief regarding the circumstances of the incident, remarking on how it might irrevocably affect both Guevara’s life and the lives of the officers involved. The entire interaction was captured on police body cameras and dash cameras, with video materials made available for public viewing on the APD’s YouTube channel, where viewer discretion is advised due to the graphic nature of the content.

Reports indicated that Guevara expressed a troubling mindset after the shooting, allegedly stating that he shot at the officers knowing they would return fire and indicated a desire not to continue living. Notably, Guevara was previously on probation related to a charge of assault causing bodily injury-family violence effective January 2024. His bond for the recent charges has been set at $195,000.

This incident not only highlights the dangers faced by law enforcement officers but also raises important discussions regarding youth violence and mental health issues in communities.
