Nellie was born on May 5th, 1929, in Moline, Texas, to parents Ray and Ladell McMahan. She graduated from Lometa High School before pursuing her passion for art, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Texas at Austin after receiving professional training at business colleges in San Angelo and El Paso.
Throughout her career, Nell served as an art teacher at several public high schools across Texas, sharing her love for creativity with countless students. In addition to her teaching career, she retired from the Austin Police Department, where she dedicated more than twenty years to public service. Nell’s commitment to her community extended beyond her professional life; she volunteered with local art museums and participated in various art projects that enriched the cultural fabric of the region.
Nell’s personal life was marked by deep family ties and warm hospitality. She married Arthur Hempen in 1949, and together they had two children: daughter Jerri Levi and son Patrick Hempen. After the passing of Arthur Hempen, she married Arthur Clark. Nell is survived by her daughter Jerri, son Patrick, sister Maisie Everett, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Hempen and Arthur Clark.
In a quiet ceremony, Nell’s immediate family held a prayerful burial service at Cook-Walden/Forest Oaks Funeral Home and Memorial Park following her death. A celebration of her life is tentatively planned for June 13, 2026, in Lampasas, Texas, at a location to be determined, in consideration of not conflicting with the McMahan family reunion.
