Austin, Texas – Alterstudio Architecture has unveiled the Falcon Ledge Residence, an innovative home designed for a newly married couple planning to expand their family. Built on a steep ravine site that was previously considered undevelopable due to its complex topography, this residence rises vertically, seamlessly integrating with its natural surroundings.

The Falcon Ledge Residence spans 3,813 square feet and is structured in such a way as to provide optimal views and natural light. Entry to the home is achieved via a platform that was initially used for construction staging but has since been transformed into a garage and bridge entry. This clever design choice not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also helps in overcoming the challenges posed by the site.

Living spaces are strategically located on the upper levels of the residence, while more private areas, such as bedrooms and family rooms, are situated below. This vertical organization of space maximizes views of the surrounding landscape while providing privacy enhanced by elevation and dense foliage.

The overall architecture emphasizes minimal disturbance of the existing site, crafting a residence that weaves harmoniously into the landscape. The exterior is clad in vertical steel panels designed to withstand harsh weather conditions and evolving environmental factors over time. Such a choice in materials aims to ensure longevity and maintenance ease, while also minimizing the need for mid-life renovations.

Careful design details include recessed openings that frame specific vistas and mitigate solar gain. The interior features cross-ventilation systems that promote passive cooling, enhancing the home’s overall environmental performance. This performance integrates both passive and active strategies, which include optimized glazing and operable windows that facilitate airflow and light filtration.

The orientation of the Falcon Ledge Residence is carefully calculated to maximize solar efficiency and thermal performance. Standard construction methods have been employed, such as traditional wood framing and trusses, which help to manage project costs effectively. Custom elements have been reserved for areas that require special design considerations due to environmental exposure or specific spatial impact.

Completed in October 2022, the project aims to demonstrate how innovative design can coexist with the constraints of challenging sites. Notably, this project received a Merit Award in the 2023 Residential Architect Design Awards, showcasing its recognition within the architectural community.

Inside the residence, finishes include white oak flooring and cabinetry, Garapa wood soffits, and exquisite Tadelakt plaster in bathrooms. The layout of the home is thoughtfully organized, with the upper level encompassing the garage, living room, and dining area; a middle level featuring a primary suite and another bedroom; and a lower level that provides additional bedrooms and a family room. A unique touch to the design is a secret craft room hidden behind a bookcase in the family room, creating an element of surprise for visiting guests and family members.

Alterstudio Architecture worked collaboratively with landscape architect Aleman Design Build and various engineering firms for structural and mechanical needs, showcasing a holistic approach to design that harmonizes architecture and landscaping.
