News Summary

In commemoration of Juneteenth, new interactive signs were unveiled at Bethany Cemetery in East Austin, the first cemetery for Black residents. Accompanied by QR codes, these signs provide visitors with information on the lives of those interred, highlighting the cemetery’s historical significance. Ongoing preservation efforts are supported by local organizations and funding from developers, focusing on maintaining the cemetery’s legacy.

AUSTIN – On Saturday, new interactive signs were unveiled at Bethany Cemetery, a significant historical site in East Austin that serves as the city’s first cemetery for Black residents. This unveiling coincided with the community celebration of Juneteenth, a day commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.

The newly installed signs are accompanied by QR codes, allowing visitors to access detailed information about the lives and histories of the individuals interred at the cemetery and the community’s heritage. This initiative aims to educate visitors about the rich history of Bethany Cemetery, where many early residents of East Austin, including those who lived through enslavement and experienced Austin’s initial Juneteenth celebrations, are buried.

Leaders from the Bethany Cemetery Association have expressed a desire to preserve and share the often-overlooked narratives of those laid to rest in the cemetery. This project reflects ongoing efforts to recognize the contributions of the cemetery’s inhabitants to the fabric of Austin’s history.

Bethany Cemetery, founded in 1893 to serve Black Austinites, has faced numerous challenges over the years, including instances of underfunding and threats of encroachment from nearby development projects. Recently, these concerns came to a head with plans for a 592-unit apartment complex adjacent to the cemetery. However, developers have agreed to contribute $50,000 towards preservation and educational efforts to ensure that the cemetery is not adversely affected by the project.

In addition to the developer’s contribution, the City of Austin is providing $95,000 through its Economic Development Department’s Heritage Preservation Grant Program. This funding is designated for revitalization efforts and enhancing educational resources related to the cemetery. The African American Resource Advisory Commission has also proposed additional funding requests, including $20,300 for annual grounds maintenance and $23,000 for further signage intended to promote awareness and education.

As part of ongoing initiatives for the cemetery, community members have participated in volunteer clean-up events and have celebrated Juneteenth as an opportunity to honor the individuals buried there. The president of the Bethany Cemetery Association, recognized for her commitment to preserving the cemetery and its history, has been instrumental in fostering educational partnerships with local organizations, such as Austin ISD.

The cemetery has also been a final resting place for significant figures, including Buffalo Soldiers and early Black settlers, emphasizing its importance as a cultural and historical landmark. Efforts to bring greater awareness to the cemetery’s significance have led to enhancements in visitor resources, such as the recent installation of interactive signs.

Looking ahead, the Historic Landmark Commission is scheduled to vote on related matters on August 7, which will proceed to discussions by the Planning Commission and City Council. These discussions will address ongoing preservation efforts and resource allocations for the cemetery.
