News Summary

Austin’s food scene is bustling this April, with new restaurant openings and the closure of some beloved establishments. Amid recent health concerns regarding measles exposure at a popular eatery, the city continues to showcase its culinary diversity through innovative dining experiences and local talent recognized in the James Beard Awards.

Austin is witnessing a dynamic month for its food scene with several notable restaurant openings and closures, alongside a health response to a recent measles exposure at a local eatery. April has brought new culinary options and changes that reflect the city’s diverse dining culture.

Simon Madera, the owner of La Holly, Taco Flats, and La Dosis, has been a significant player in Austin’s dining landscape since moving from McAllen in 2001. Inspired by his mother, who owned a café, Madera’s restaurant at La Dosis features his mother’s recipe for carne guisada made with a unique red chile base. He reflects on his food preferences, indicating that his ideal drink would be a mezcal margarita with homemade chile salt from La Holly, and for dessert, he favors vanilla ice cream from either Amy’s or Bésame.

This month, Austin has seen significant activity with new restaurant openings highlighting the city’s culinary innovation. Among them is the Parish Barbecue food truck, launched by Holden Fulco, a former pitmaster with experience at renowned barbecue spots. Fulco’s menu includes distinctive items such as brisket seasoned with Tabasco-infused vinegar and crawfish cornbread dressing, providing a Cajun twist to traditional barbecue.

Intimate dining experiences are also on the rise, with Chef Anthony Martin, formerly associated with Michelin-starred restaurants, hosting private dinners at the Residence in East Austin. Appreciated for his culinary skills, Martin is bringing a personalized dining experience to food enthusiasts in the city.

The involvement of Austin’s culinary talent has also been recognized in the James Beard Awards, with local personalities such as Arjav Ezekiel of Birdie’s and various restaurants in nearby San Antonio and Marfa earning spots as finalists, showcasing the region’s growing acclaim in the food industry.

While new spots are emerging, April has also marked the closure of some beloved establishments, including Thom’s Market and Skylark Lounge in Austin, as well as Pinch Boil House and Jardin in San Antonio. These closures signify the ever-changing nature of the restaurant scene in Central Texas.

Another significant issue affecting Austin’s food scene involves Curra’s Mexican restaurant, which has been in operation for 30 years. The establishment was recently notified about a potential measles exposure after cases were reported, raising concerns for the owner, Julieta Rodriguez, regarding how it might impact business operations. In response, Curra’s took immediate measures to disinfect its facility and assured the public that all staff members are vaccinated and symptom-free.

Public health officials in Austin have emphasized the importance of the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine as crucial protection against the measles virus. Following the report of the measles case, local health authorities have been active in conducting outreach initiatives and contact tracing to mitigate further spread.

In addition to the health concerns, Austin welcomed an expanded location for Knuckle Sandwich, a popular sandwich trailer, now at the Far Out Lounge. The new space features a broader menu and inventive cocktails, all housed within an inviting atmosphere reminiscent of the 1970s. This expansion follows the trailer’s success in its prior location, indicating continued demand for its offerings.

New coffee options have also emerged, with Haraz Coffee House opening its first location in Austin, specializing in traditional Yemeni coffee. Positioned conveniently across from the University of Texas campus, Haraz Coffee’s menu boasts various Yemeni coffee preparations alongside standard coffee drinks and refreshing alternatives to appeal to a wide customer base.

As the food landscape evolves in Austin, the blend of exciting new openings, alongside the challenges and necessary health responses, underscores the vibrant and ever-changing nature of the city’s dining experience.
