Austin – A 31-year-old man, Deepak Kandel, has been charged with murder following a stabbing incident on a CapMetro bus that occurred on May 14, 2025. The incident took place around 6:45 p.m. in the 500 block of South Lamar Boulevard, near Barton Springs Road, and has resulted in the tragic death of 30-year-old Akshay Gupta.

Gupta suffered traumatic injuries from a single stab wound to the neck and was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. after first responders’ life-saving measures proved unsuccessful. Reports from witnesses indicate that multiple calls were made to the police regarding a man covered in blood on the bus.

According to investigators, Kandel, who was sitting next to Gupta, stabbed him without any provocation. After the attack, Kandel exited the bus amidst the ensuing chaos and fled the scene on foot. However, law enforcement was able to locate and detain him shortly thereafter. During questioning, Kandel reportedly confessed to the stabbing, asserting that he believed Gupta resembled his uncle.

Kandel has since been booked into the Travis County Jail, facing a charge of first-degree murder. This incident marks the 25th homicide in Austin for the year 2025.
