Samuel James Johnson, affectionately known as “Sam,” passed away unexpectedly on July 13, 2025, at his home in Austin. He was 63 years old. Johnson was a prominent attorney in the Austin area and a dedicated member of the community.

Born on May 8, 1962, Sam was the youngest child of June Page and Judge Samuel Dodson Johnson, Jr. His family moved to Austin in 1973, where Sam attended several local schools, including Casis Elementary, Baker Junior High, O. Henry Junior High, and finally, Austin High School. During his time at Austin High, he excelled in academics and activities, becoming a member of the debate team, playing Varsity Football, serving as President of the Class of 1980, and achieving recognition as a National Merit Scholar.

Sam continued his education at Baylor University, where he made a significant mark as a Truman Scholar and a finalist for the Rhodes Scholarship. He was deeply involved in campus life as President of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and garnered attention as Mr. January in the Men of Baylor 1983 calendar. Following his undergraduate studies, Sam chose to attend the University of Texas School of Law after being inspired by a photo of his father in a suit during a campus tour. He graduated with high honors in 1987, becoming a member of the Texas Law Review, Chancellors, and the Order of the Coif.

After law school, Sam clerked for Federal District Judge Sidney A. Fitzwater in Dallas. His career took off as a trial lawyer at Scott, Douglass, & McConnico, where he became a partner in 1990 and continued to work until his passing in 2025. His colleagues and clients alike held him in high regard for his professionalism and unwavering dedication to his work.

Beyond his professional achievements, Sam was a man of many passions. He had a deep love for history, particularly concerning World War II. His hobbies included enjoying Blue Bell vanilla ice cream, listening to loud music, and running. Known for his warm personality, infectious laugh, and gift for storytelling, he formed lasting memories with family and friends.

Sam was an involved father and stepfather, actively participating in his daughters’ lives. He coached their volleyball team and engaged in Girl Scouts activities. Together with his wife, Maureen Whelan Johnson, he embraced her children as his own, creating a loving and supportive blended family. Sam’s family also includes daughters Ella and Caroline Page, and stepchildren Timothy, Sarah, and Kevin Swanson. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Janet Holubec.

Visitation services will be held on July 19, 2025, at Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. A memorial service is planned for July 20 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Austin. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Sam Johnson can be made to The Carter Center, the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Texas, or The Helping Hand Home for Children.
