Firefighters extinguishing a fire at an apartment building in South Austin

News Summary

South Austin has been shaken by a series of apartment fires, the most recent at Double Creek Apartments, leaving one person in critical condition. Firefighters responded quickly to the scene, and although the apartment was largely unharmed, the balcony sustained damage. This incident follows another fire caused by an electrical malfunction at a nearby location, highlighting growing fire safety concerns in the community as winter months often see an uptick in such incidents.

Fire Emergency in South Austin: One Injured as Flames Rage

In a troubling turn of events, South Austin faced a series of apartment fires recently that left one individual in critical condition. The first incident unfolded at the Double Creek Apartments on South First Street. Firefighters sprang into action after a fire ignited on a second-floor balcony in the 11000 block around 4:30 p.m. One of the residents was rushed to the Dell Seton Medical Center via Travis County Starflight and, unfortunately, is currently battling serious injuries.

Thanks to the swift response of the firefighters, who swiftly doused the flames, the interior of the apartment remained largely unscathed. The balcony, however, did sustain a bit of damage, but those living around the affected unit can breathe a sigh of relief as they were not displaced and the fire was contained.

A Busy Week for Austin Firefighters

The fire at Double Creek Apartments wasn’t an isolated event. Just the very next morning, Austin firefighters jumped into action again, responding to yet another blaze at 5005 Manor Road. This time, the trouble started in the laundry room of the building, where an electrical malfunction caused a fire to spread into the walls. Firefighters arrived promptly at approximately 5:45 a.m. and managed to bring the fire under control by 6:39 a.m.

Miraculously, no residents were injured or forced out of their homes due to this incident, but it highlights just how critical it is for people in the area to remain vigilant about fire safety.

Recent History of Fires in Austin

Austin Fire Department (AFD) has certainly had its hands full over the past few days. Just a few days earlier on Sunday, a three-alarm fire engulfed the Trails of Walnut Creek apartments, causing a staggering $1.2 million in damages and displacing around 35 residents. This catastrophic blaze reaffirmed the importance of fire prevention and preparedness during the winter months.

Fire Chief Thayer Smith has pointed out that December and January are notorious for being peak months for structure fires in Austin. The leading causes of these winter disasters often relate to the improper use of space heaters and fireplaces. As families huddle indoors to stay warm, the risk of unintended fires increases significantly.

Warm Encouragement for Residents

As Austin copes with an uptick in these troubling incidents, it’s a friendly reminder to all residents to keep fire safety at the forefront of their minds. Checking smoke alarms, making sure space heaters are operated properly, and being cautious with flammable materials can save lives and property. Everyone deserves a safe home and community.

In addition to the apartment fires, the AFD has been responding to multiple other incidents, including brush fires near homeless camps. The city is indeed facing a challenging time, and given the spate of recent fires, it’s crucial for everyone to remain alert and proactive in their fire safety measures.

As the chilly winter days continue, let’s work together to ensure that South Austin remains a safe place for everyone. Community spirit means looking out for one another, sharing tips and reminders about fire safety, and being prepared to act swiftly in case of emergencies. Stay safe, Austin!
