New baggage handling system in Austin Airport

News Summary

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has announced a $241 million investment to upgrade its baggage handling system. The project aims to enhance capacity and efficiency, increasing bags managed from 1,600 to 2,400 per hour by 2025, and up to 4,000 by 2026. The upgrade will create a new conveyor system and is part of a larger $4 billion expansion initiative to accommodate the growing number of travelers, expected to reach 30 million annually. Sustainability and local culture remain central to this transformation.

Austin, Texas – Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has announced a significant investment of $241 million aimed at upgrading its baggage handling system. This upgrade is expected to enhance the airport’s capacity, efficiency, and overall traveler experience as it prepares for an increasing number of passengers in the coming years.

The current baggage handling system at AUS has the capacity to manage approximately 1,600 bags per hour. However, with the completion of the first phase of the upgrade projected for summer 2025, this capacity will expand to about 2,400 bags per hour. By 2026, the improved system is anticipated to handle up to 4,000 bags per hour. This increased efficiency is expected to lead to fewer flight delays and minimize the occurrence of lost baggage, ultimately benefiting travelers.

Construction work for the baggage system upgrade will take place at night to avoid interrupting daily passenger operations. Funding for this ambitious project will come from airport revenue and federal grants, ensuring that no tax dollars are used in the process.

This upgrade is part of a larger $4 billion expansion initiative known as “Journey with AUS.” As part of this comprehensive plan, a new 1.5-mile conveyor belt system will be introduced, designed to transport bags from check-in through security to the planes, streamlining the travel process even further.

Passenger Growth and Future Capacity

AUS has experienced remarkable growth, setting a record in 2023 with 22 million travelers. With the expansion underway, the airport is preparing to accommodate up to 30 million annual passengers, a significant increase from its original design capacity of 15 million. As part of this preparation, the airport is investing in various projects to enhance its facilities.

The ongoing West Gate Terminal Expansion project is expected to cost $165 million and is anticipated to be completed by 2026. This expansion will include three new gates, five waiting areas, new dining options, a playscape for families, and a mezzanine level featuring a skyline viewing area. Moreover, improvements to the TSA Checkpoint 3 will expand it to eight lanes, further easing the security process for travelers.

Additional Developments

In addition to the baggage handling upgrade and West Gate expansion, AUS has plans for an Atrium Infill project, which will add 12,000 square feet to enhance passenger flow and alleviate congestion during peak times. A new taxiway system is also scheduled for completion by 2027, enhancing connectivity to Concourse B.

Looking ahead, a new Arrivals and Departures Hall is on track to be completed by 2030 at an estimated cost of $865 million. This new facility will feature updated ticketing processes and enlarged baggage areas to further improve the experience for arriving and departing passengers. Additionally, a new 20-gate Concourse B will begin construction in 2026, with a budget set at $1 billion. An underground tunnel will also connect Concourse B to the Barbara Jordan Terminal, partly funded by a $33.27 million grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Focus on Sustainability and Local Culture

Throughout this extensive transformation, AUS aims to maintain an “Austin-style” atmosphere, emphasizing local music, art, and food to create a unique experience for travelers. Sustainability efforts are also at the forefront of the expansion, with the airport actively pursuing carbon neutrality accreditation as part of its commitment to a more environmentally friendly operation.

In conclusion, the $241 million investment in the baggage handling system upgrade at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is just one aspect of an extensive expansion that seeks to improve passenger experience, increase capacity, and embody the local culture while promoting sustainable practices.
