In June 2024, Sony Pictures Entertainment acquired the Alamo Drafthouse chain for an undisclosed sum from owners Altamont Capital Partners, Fortress Investment Group, and Alamo’s founder Tim League. The purchase followed the closing of all five of the Alamo Drafthouse locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area as the franchisee declared Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The Dallas-Fort Worth theaters ultimately reopened.
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema first entered the Houston market in May 2003 at West Oaks Mall, where it operated until June 2012.
