Austin, Texas —

Simon Madera, the owner of Taco Flats, has hired former pitmaster Miguel Vidal to lead his new barbecue venture, Churchrow Tejas Barbecue, which is set to open on October 22 at 1521 W. Anderson Lane in North Austin. The restaurant will focus on barbecue plates and tacos made with smoked meats, embodying a more casual environment than its predecessor, which was an upscale barbecue establishment.

In addition to its menu, Churchrow will offer counter service and feature a full bar serving tequila-centered cocktails, along with a Latino-inspired design aesthetic. Vidal, who previously owned Valentina’s Tex-Mex BBQ, hopes to rebuild his reputation through his new role at Churchrow.

Vidal’s prior venture began as a well-received food trailer in 2013 but later transitioned into a brick-and-mortar location in Buda, which opened to significant fanfare. Unfortunately, it struggled and operated for less than a year before closing due to mismanagement. This closure led to bankruptcy proceedings amid accusations of employee mistreatment and a Department of Labor investigation. In September 2024, Vidal filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, reporting debts of over $2 million owed to approximately 60 creditors.

Currently, Vidal is collaborating with a tax attorney to resolve debts tied to sales and labor taxes as part of his bankruptcy agreement. Prior to joining Churchrow, he briefly consulted for a barbecue food truck in Menchaca but sought stable employment to fulfill his bankruptcy obligations. Madera acknowledged the risks associated with hiring Vidal due to his troubled past but expressed confidence in his talent and potential.

Vidal and Madera have been friends for about 25 years, dating back to their time studying together at St. Edward’s University. Their longstanding friendship has played a significant role in Vidal’s opportunity to join Churchrow, where he aims to change the narrative of his career and validate the support received from friends and family.

While the upcoming restaurant aims to carve its own niche in Austin’s competitive barbecue scene, the collaboration between Madera and Vidal signifies a blend of experience, passion, and a fresh start for both individuals. As the opening date approaches, both are optimistic about Churchrow’s potential to resonate with local diners.
