Austin Man Identified as Shooter in Target Parking Lot Attack That Left Three Dead, Including Child

Austin, Texas – The shooter identified as Ethan Nieneker, 32, has been charged in a shocking incident of violence that took place in a Target parking lot in North Austin, where three people, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed on August 11 at approximately 2:15 p.m. CT. The victims included Hector Leopoldo Martinez Machuca, 24, Adam Chow, 65, and Chow’s granddaughter.

The attack commenced when Nieneker began firing at Martinez Machuca, who was collecting shopping carts. After fatally shooting Machuca, Nieneker then turned his gun towards Chow, who was shot while seated in the driver’s seat of his car, before also targeting his granddaughter in the backseat. Chow’s wife was able to escape the vehicle but sustained minor injuries due to the chaos.

Nieneker fled the scene in Chow’s vehicle, aggressively assaulting multiple individuals and stealing additional cars during his escape. Upon apprehension, he made bizarre claims to police, asserting that he was Jesus and did not provide a clear motive for the shooting spree. Investigations revealed that the handgun used in the attack was obtained through a family member, prompting an ongoing inquiry into possible charges against that relative.

This tragic event marks Austin’s 39th, 40th, and 41st homicides of 2025, as identified by the police. Chief Lisa Davis has described the incident as an “unprovoked and deliberate act of violence” that has resulted in the loss of innocent lives in a place typically regarded as safe.

His past criminal record includes offenses such as assault causing bodily injury, driving under the influence, violation of a protective order, and marijuana possession. He is currently facing charges of two counts of capital murder and one count of first-degree felony murder related to the tragic incident.
