Austin – West China Tea House, displaced from its longtime location along the I-35 corridor, has found a temporary home at Flow Yoga in Westgate. The popular tea house was uprooted due to a highway expansion project that commenced in 2024, after 12 years of operation in its previous spot. Owners are currently facing delays in their plans to reopen in Hyde Park at 1715 East 7th St. due to various permitting issues with the City of Austin.

In the interim, patrons of West China Tea House can enjoy the rolling tea service at Flow Yoga. This unique style encourages guests to engage in conversation while sharing tea, with offerings priced at $6 per pot. The owner, So-han Fan, highlights the tea house’s goal of fostering a communal atmosphere for connection and discussion among guests.

The tea house has become a delightful addition to Flow Yoga, which opened its newest studio on South Congress Avenue in June 2025. The partnership has blossomed from the mutual appreciation between the tea house staff and the yoga studio, as employees have become patrons of one another’s businesses during this transitional period.

West China Tea House plans to expand its offerings upon its eventual reopening, which will include self-service options, private tastings, and various events such as technical classes and support groups specifically for men. These new features aim to enhance the cultural and community-centric focus of the tea house.

Previously, Fan received a financial offer from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to facilitate the relocation, equating to approximately $560,000, which will cover two years of rent in a comparable space. Despite this support, the tea house has encountered obstacles as it navigates the city’s permitting process, which Fan has described as challenging and difficult to decipher.

Currently, the tea house operates from Flow Yoga on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 2:30 PM to 7:30 PM, and Fridays through Sundays from 2:30 PM to 10 PM. This location serves as a temporary haven while efforts to open the new tea house in Hyde Park continue.

The story of West China Tea House reflects the challenges faced by many businesses when confronted with urban development initiatives. These challenges underscore the importance of community spaces that encourage dialogue, connection, and cultural engagement. As West China Tea House continues to navigate its transition, the support from patrons and partnerships with local businesses like Flow Yoga symbolize the resilience of community enterprises in the face of displacement.
