Austin, TX – Mark James Hanna, a respected attorney and advocate for education and integration, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 77. He spent his life contributing to Texas law and supporting various professional practices. Mark’s life was not only marked by his legal accomplishments, but also by his dedication to family and love for the outdoors.

Born on September 24, 1947, at Walker Air Force Base in Roswell, New Mexico, Mark was the son of Colonel Keith C. and Bettye Bennett Hanna. He held a special attachment to Greenville, Texas, where he spent many summer days surrounded by family. Mark graduated from Austin High School in 1965 and chose to enroll at the University of Texas at Austin rather than move to Washington, D.C., with his family. This decision laid the groundwork for his legal career, where he made significant contributions over the decades.

A passionate advocate for education, Mark’s early experiences shaped his character. As a young student, he attended the elementary school in Topeka, Kansas, which was directly linked to the landmark Supreme Court ruling of Brown v. Board of Education. He was part of the second-grade class that integrated the district, fostering his commitment to education and civil rights from an early age.

Mark pursued his higher education at the University of Texas at Austin, lived in Roberts Dormitory, and became a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. After completing his undergraduate studies, he attended UT Law School, preparing him for a successful legal career that would span several years.

In addition to his legal career, Mark served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Combat Medic, undergoing rigorous training at Jump School in Fort Benning, Georgia. He showcased resilience and dedication throughout his service. Following his time in the military, he returned to Austin, where he became a prominent figure in the legal profession.

Throughout his career, Mark used his expertise to pass significant legislation, impacting various industries including real estate, healthcare, and professional associations. His efforts helped shape legal practices across Texas, and he became a trusted advisor to many professionals including Realtors, Dentists, and Registered Nurses. Mark’s contributions to society extended beyond the courtroom—he was deeply respected for his kindness and integrity.

A devoted family man, Mark is survived by his wife of 45 years, Deborah Shelton Hanna, their son Mark James Hanna Jr., and granddaughter Catherine Quail Hanna from Houston. He is also remembered by his other two sons, Todd and Trent Hanna, along with a niece Sommer Pruitt and several extended family members. Mark was predeceased by his parents and sister, Jill Hanna Pruitt. His commitment to family was evident, as he cherished his roles as a son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, and uncle.

Mark’s love for the outdoors began early in life through his involvement with the Boy Scouts, where he earned the rank of Eagle Scout. He enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, and fishing, sharing memorable moments at Lake Austin with family. A dedicated sports fan, he supported the Texas Longhorns, particularly their football team.

A memorial service in Mark’s honor is scheduled for May 31, 2025, at The Episcopal Church of The Good Shepherd in Austin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Darrell K Royal Research Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease or Friends 4 Life Animal Shelter, reflecting Mark’s compassion for both medical research and animals.

Mark James Hanna leaves behind a legacy of service, compassion, and dedication to the community. His impact on Texas law and his commitment to family and friends will be cherished by all who knew him.
