Lometa, Texas – Joyce Louise Poe Scogin, a longtime community member and valedictorian of Lometa High School, passed away peacefully at the age of 93 on May 13, 2025. Born on September 29, 1931, in Moline, Texas, she made significant contributions to her family and community throughout her life.

Joyce Scogin was the middle child of five, growing up alongside her brothers Bob, Raymond “Corky,” and Donald, and her sister Laura. She graduated as the valedictorian of Lometa High School in 1949, where she excelled as a student and participated actively in athletics, particularly as a guard in the girls’ basketball team. After high school, she relocated to Austin to attend business school, where she would later meet her future husband, Gaylord Virgil Scogin. The couple married on February 24, 1951.

Joyce was known for her infectious joy and deep commitment to her family and faith. She created a loving home where family traditions flourished, notably through her hosting of Tuesday night suppers for her children and grandchildren. Her culinary talents were showcased in her signature dishes, including blueberry banana cream cheese pies, German chocolate cake, and homemade ice cream.

In addition to her culinary skills, Joyce had a passion for sewing, often making car seat covers and dresses for her family. She was also a devoted sports fan, particularly of the San Antonio Spurs, with whom she enjoyed attending games alongside her grandson, Nathan.

Joyce’s involvement with the community extended beyond her family. She was an active member of Northwest Baptist Church, where she taught 4th grade Sunday School and was a participant in Vacation Bible Schools. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her to assist others by transporting friends and neighbors to their appointments when needed. Joyce was musically gifted, playing the piano and passionately singing hymns, with “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art” being among her favorites. She cherished Psalm 23, which reflected her strong faith.

Throughout her life, Joyce faced personal challenges, including the loss of her husband, brothers, and grandson Nathan Austin. Despite these hardships, she remained resilient, surrounded by her surviving family: her sister Laura Bryant, her children Russell, James, and Karen, and her grandchildren. Joyce also left behind a legacy of nine great-grandchildren, who will continue to remember and honor her impact on their lives.

A celebration of Joyce’s life will be held on May 21, 2025, at Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home in Austin, allowing family and friends to come together in remembrance. This will be followed by a gravesite gathering at Hurst Ranch Cemetery the following morning.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to community service initiatives in lieu of flowers. Joyce’s life stands testament to her unwavering faith, love for family, and deep roots in her community, exemplifying the values that she practiced and instilled in those around her.
