Born on September 29, 1931, in Moline, Texas, to Elmer and Alice Arrowood Poe, Joyce was the middle child in a family of five, alongside her brothers Bob, Raymond “Corky,” Donald, and her sister Laura. She demonstrated academic excellence and graduated as valedictorian of Lometa High School in 1949, where she also participated in girls’ basketball as a guard.
Following her graduation, Joyce pursued further education at a business school in Austin. It was there that she met her future husband, Gaylord Virgil Scogin. Their union began on February 24, 1951, marking the start of a lifelong partnership grounded in shared values and family devotion.
Life and Community Engagement
Joyce’s life was characterized by joy and a deep commitment to her family and faith. She regularly hosted family gatherings, particularly Tuesday night suppers, fostering a warm environment for her children and grandchildren. Joyce was well-known for her culinary skills, especially her beloved blueberry banana cream cheese pies, German chocolate cake, homemade ice cream, sourdough bread, cinnamon sweet rolls, and waffles.
In addition to her remarkable cooking, Joyce expressed her creativity through sewing, making various items for her loved ones. A devoted basketball fan, she particularly supported the San Antonio Spurs, reflecting her spirited personality and lively interests.

Additionally, Joyce leaves behind several grandchildren, including Matthew (Angie), Mark (Andrea), Melissa (Jeremy), Amanda (Michael), Joshua, and Michael (Jessica-Michelle), along with nine great-grandchildren: Kyndall, Lucas, Payton, Bradley, Avery, Brie, Jaxson, Jackson, and Ella-Kate.
Memorial Services
A celebration of Joyce’s life is scheduled for May 21, 2025, at the Cook-Walden Chapel of the Hills Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 4:30 PM to 6:30 PM, followed by the service at 6:30 PM. A gathering of family and friends will take place the following day, May 22, 2025, at Hurst Ranch Cemetery at 11 AM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made through acts of service or donations to one’s congregation or community, honoring Joyce’s spirit of generosity and commitment to helping others.
