News Summary

Over three dozen turtles are set to return to the University of Texas at Austin campus as part of a project by student researchers. This relocation is significant for restoring the campus’s turtle pond, a key study area and ecosystem on campus. Despite challenges in capturing the animals, students plan to continue research on their behaviors, while a recent fundraising campaign raised nearly $8,000 to support biodiversity studies and care for the turtle pond.

AUSTIN, Texas – More than three dozen turtles are set to return to the University of Texas at Austin (UT) campus by the weekend as student researchers finalize a project that has spanned an entire semester. This relocation marks a significant step in restoring the campus’s beloved turtle pond, which has served as a notable study spot, a highlight for campus tours, and a site for biodiversity research.

The turtle relocation is part of a final mission undertaken by students led by their research team. The beloved turtle pond on the north side of UT’s iconic tower is not just a visual attraction but also an essential part of the college ecosystem. Last fall, around 100 turtles were temporarily relocated to the university’s J.J. Pickle Research Campus in North Austin due to necessary repairs on the pond. So far, only about 20 of those turtles have made their way back to the campus pond.

The relocation process has presented challenges, primarily because many turtles are skittish by nature, and the pond’s designs at the Pickle campus have made capturing them difficult. Since 2023, student researchers, under the guidance of Professor Justin Havird, have been studying these turtles, delving into their behaviors and environmental interactions.

With a larger turtle population returning to the campus pond, both students and visitors will benefit from enhanced experiences, which also opens doors for continuous scientific study. These researchers plan to keep sampling the turtles throughout the summer and are diligently preparing to submit a scientific paper to document their findings.

The turtle pond functions as a unique self-sustaining ecosystem right in the heart of the bustling college campus. Repairs made to the pond were aimed at addressing leak issues and improving the landscaping to prevent erosion. A university spokesperson emphasized that the turtle ponds are vital to campus aesthetics, providing a peaceful retreat for students.

In addition, during the ongoing turtle relocation process, a research lab has conducted a project focused on studying the microbiomes of the turtles. The university aims to return the turtles to their pond in time for the winter freeze and the upcoming spring breeding season.

To support the turtle pond and the initiatives of the Texas Field Station Network, the College of Natural Sciences organized a successful fundraising campaign. This effort raised nearly $8,000 from over 170 donors. The funds will finance research and student-led projects that investigate environmental changes, urbanization, and climate impacts.

This fundraising campaign was designed to engage the community while showcasing UT’s leadership in biodiversity research. As part of their experience, students have participated in hands-on research work involving the collection and processing of turtle samples, underscoring the educational value of this initiative.

Community members are encouraged to respect the turtle pond ecosystem and to avoid feeding or disturbing the turtles as they acclimate back to their habitat. The turtle pond has proven to be a source of solace for students, particularly during stressful academic periods, and has facilitated social connections following the COVID-19 restrictions.

As the days draw closer to the weekend, excitement builds for the return of the turtles, which signifies not only a return to normalcy but also a renewed commitment to environmental stewardship and research at UT Austin.
