Del Valle – A man was killed in a homicide early Saturday morning, May 3, 2025, while attempting to recover his family’s stolen vehicle. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old Anthony Salas. This tragic incident occurred around 3:21 a.m. near the intersection of Ross Road and Thome Valley Drive, not far from Del Valle Elementary School.

According to reports, Salas was shot during his effort to retrieve the car, which had been stolen from the Sun Chase Neighborhood. The Travis County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call reporting the stolen vehicle at the same time that the Austin Police Department (APD) received another call regarding a person being struck by a vehicle. Evidence suggests that after Salas was shot, he was subsequently hit by a vehicle, ultimately resulting in his death.

The APD is actively searching for several individuals who are wanted for questioning in connection with this case. Surveillance footage captured these individuals burglarizing various vehicles in South and East Austin during the night prior to Salas’s fatal incident. Investigators believe these individuals may have crucial information that could aid in solving the homicide.

Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have information about the incident or the individuals involved to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the APD at 512-974-TIPS or through Crime Stoppers at 512-472-8477. A reward of up to $1,000 may be available for tips that lead to an arrest.

This incident marks the 23rd homicide recorded in Austin for 2025. Although the APD’s Vehicular Homicide crews responded to the scene, the death is not classified as a vehicular homicide, indicating that the investigation will focus on the shooting aspect of the case.

As the investigation continues, further details from the Austin Police Department are expected to be released by Monday evening. The circumstances surrounding the event have sparked concerns among community members in Del Valle, who are now looking for answers and increased security measures in the area.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement. The events leading to Salas’s death have opened discussions about the impact of vehicle theft in the community and the subsequent dangers associated with confronting alleged thieves. As this case develops, the APD aims to provide more clarity and keep the public informed.
